Player ratings: City 2 Celtic 1

10th August 2009

Given – Held on well to one shot. Shay probably expended most energy berating his teammates for sloppy defending at corners. 7

Zabaleta – A chance to play 90 minutes in his rightful position and he was excellent. Tigerish in the tackle and put over a superb cross for the first goal. 8

Dunne – Started on left side of central defence and completely lost his man for the first goal. Subsequently returned to right hand side and had no further problems. …

Report: City 2 Celtic 1

10th August 2009

Goals: Barry 15, Bellamy 50 for City. Killen 24 for Celtic.

City completed pre-season with a morale boosting victory over a weakened Celtic side with goals from Gareth Barry and former hoops hero Craig Bellamy. Former City academy star Chris Killen netted for Celtic.

The number of empty seats in the home areas were disappointing, but at least there was a large turnout from the ever boisterous Celtic fans, who were given the whole of the South Stand. Unsurprisingly they were in …

Saturday 8 August, 3.00pm

City round off their pre-season fixtures with the Eastlands tradition of a prestige home fixture. Celtic are this season’s visitors and it promises to be an entertaining game with the Scots doubtless in jubilant mood following their Champions League heroics on Wednesday.

Expect to see them singing the praises of none other than Georgios Samaras, and it’s been a while since anyone did that at Eastlands! The opposing fans should also give a warmer reception to Shay Given …

Player ratings: Rangers 3 City 2

6th August 2009

Given – Pulled off a peach of a save prior to the second goal, when he was uncharacteristically caught in no-mans land. 6

Richards – Another game under his belt, and he now needs to forge a better understanding with Toure. 6

Toure – Arguably the pick of the defenders but that wasn’t saying a lot! 6

Dunne – Trademark challenges, but the Hughes method of defenders being left one on one with attackers still doesn’t suit him. 5

Bridge – Suffered a nightmare …

Report: Rangers 3 City 2

6th August 2009

Wednesday 5 August, 7.45pm
Goals: Novo 20, Miller 53, Weir 90 for Rangers. Ireland 27, Petrov 52 for City.

City scored two excellent goals but they weren’t enough to prevent a last minute defeat that was a damning indictment on a shoddy defence.

Hughes named a strong starting line-up with Adebayor as a lone striker flanked by Robinho and Etuhu. Ireland was positioned in front of Barry and De Jong. Richard Dunne and Micah Richards both played their first 90 minutes of pre …

5th August 2009

Wednesday 5 August, 7.45pm

City take on Rangers tonight in the first half of a double header against the Old Firm clubs.

Given the ongoing injuries to Carlos Tevez and Roque Santa Cruz, expect to see more of Bellamy and Adebayor trying to forge an understanding, unless Hughes goes for a lone striker set-up.

Gareth Barry looks likely to get a run out after recovering from a minor knock and Kolo Toure should get another opportunity to familiarise himself with his new teammates.

Bellamy …

Player ratings: Barnsley 1 City 1

2nd August 2009

Given – Required to make a couple of decent stops and saw the woodwork rattled before being beaten late on. 6

Richards – Didn’t look unduly weakened by swine flu and had a solid game. 7

Toure – The debutant fitted in well alongside Onuoha, but doesn’t give the height we’ll need. 7

Onuoha – Still having to play as left sided centre half, and still doing it admirably. 7

Garrido – Just doesn’t convince defensively and it needs to be addressed. 5

Wright-Phillips – …

Report: Barnsley 1 City 1

2nd August 2009

Saturday 1 August, 3.00pm
Goals: Bogdanovic 83 for Barnsley. Petrov 88 for City.

A late goal by Barnsley followed by an even later one from Petrov provided a goalscoring ending to this entertaining friendly, where City showed signs of a team coming together as Kolo Toure was the latest debutant.

With pre season fixtures increasingly played on foreign shores as Premier League clubs seek to expand their brand, it was a pleasure to pay a visit to a more traditional home of English …

Barnsley v City

Our first pre season fixture on English soil will sadly not be seeing the debuts of Carlos Tevez or Roque Santa Cruz as they continue to be nursed back to fitness. Micah Richards has recovered from swine flu and is said to be raring to go. It remains to be seen whether Kolo Toure will be joining him at the back.

Personally I wouldn’t be surprised to see our latest capture from Arsenal make an …

Free open day at Eastlands: Thursday 6 August

31st July 2009

The club have announced an “Open House” event next Thursday which will feature an opportunity to see our new signings going through their paces.  It all sounds a bit cheesy for anyone over the age of eight, but there could be some interest in seeing whether Carlos Tevez’s heel and Roque Santa Cruz’s knees can manage a knockabout.  We wait with baited breath.

Highlights are set to include:

The squad being split into teams for some games.
Roving entertainers, face painting, balloon modellers …
