Champions League preview: Manchester City v Villarreal

18th October 2011

City take on Villarreal in real need of a victory to kickstart their Champions League campaign. The good news is that the Spaniards look the weakest team in the group, and have players missing through injury.

They don’t appear to be of the same calibre as Napoli and City, with the likes of Aguero and Silva back in the side, should claim the win. Of course European games are harder to predict than domestic fixtures. City’s travails in the Europa League are testimony to that.

Verdict: Manchester City 4 Aston Villa 1

17th October 2011

City’s run of good results against Villa continued in what was ultimately a comfortable victory. Mario Balotelli broke the deadlock with a delicious bicycle kick, and another second half blitz was capped by James Milner’s finest goal for the club.

The victory moved City to the top of the Premier League, a fitting reward for the club’s best ever start to a top flight campaign. One difference from last season is how Mancini can rest key players and still get the result. If we’re to mount a title challenge this will be a key factor.

Hart – The crucial save from Agbonlahor at 0-0 spared City from a much harder afternoon. Nonchalantly plucked a fierce Warnock drive from the air. 8

Richards (K Toure 64) – Another solid display with an inadvertent assist for the opening goal. It’s to be hoped Micah’s latest injury isn’t serious. 7

Preview: Manchester City v Aston Villa

14th October 2011

Undefeated City take on undefeated Villa in a game that threatens to be overshadowed by the upcoming Champions League and derby fixtures. It shouldn’t be.

To get three points City will need to be at their best against an Alex McLeish side that is likely to prove just as stubborn as David Moyes’ Everton. Patience may once again be required.

Verdict: Blackburn Rovers 0 Manchester City 4

3rd October 2011

If you’re going to be a hardline manager and banish unruly players, then you need to get results. That’s how Fergie gets away with it and Roberto Mancini demonstrated the same trait here.

At half-time it was looking a little different with Aguero having hobbled off and City lacking zip in the final third. If City had failed to make the breakthrough, the whispers would have started as to whether Mancini had done the right thing in banning a player who has won so many games for the blues.

3rd October 2011

Hart – Dealt excellently with long balls into the box and raged at the defence whenever they threatened to switch off. Deserved the clean sheet. 7

Zabaleta – Not always at his best going forward and rarely tested defensively. If there’s such a thing as a forward’s tackle, then Pablo was guilty of a defender’s dive. 6

Champions League verdict: Bayern Munich 2 Manchester City 0

28th September 2011

Leaving Carlos Tevez for another article, there were plenty of other things in City’s defeat by Bayern that warrant discussion. The furore around Carlos has diverted the attention from what was one of Roberto Mancini’s worst nights on the pitch.

There may have been half an hour left when Tevez failed to appear, but with Bayern in complete control and Carlos not in great form, the game was as good as over. Tevez remaining on the bench cannot be said to have cost us the game.

28th September 2011

Hart – Pulled off a series of top class saves and was rightly furious with the lack of protection he received from those in front. 9

Richards – Although Ribery caused plenty of problems, Micah was arguably our best outfield player. Did his best to take the game to Bayern. 7

Champions League preview: Bayern Munich v Manchester City

27th September 2011

While this is a good time in City’s history for our first ever match against Bayern Munich, truth be told, it’s a bad time to be playing them. Both sides are unbeaten, however Bayern haven’t conceded a goal in their last 9 games and are even more freescoring in attack than Roberto Mancini’s side.

Both teams have a key dutchman returning from injury. Unfortunately for City, Arjen Robben looks a little ahead of Nigel de Jong after the winger played for 10 minutes and scored at the weekend. This is precisely the kind of game where de Jong could be crucial for City, yet he is likely to be on the bench.

Verdict: Manchester City 2 Everton 0

26th September 2011

City secured victory over Everton thanks to goals from substitutes Mario Balotelli and James Milner. Given the resolute defending on show and our recent struggles against David Moyes’ side, this felt like a hugely significant result.

Everton were set up much like they were in December 2008, without a striker and offering nothing but frustration to City’s attempts to gain a breakthrough. On that occasion Tim Cahill popped up to score a 90th minute winner. This time City’s superior skill and discipline eventually told, giving further credence to the idea that Roberto Mancini’s side are set for greater things.
