Verdict: Wigan Athletic 0 Mancheseter City 2

20th September 2010

City produced their second 2-0 away victory in the space of four days courtesy of goals from Carlos Tevez and Yaya Toure. Heavy rain resulted in a saturated pitch which induced mistakes everywhere except in a City defence that once again looked impregnable.

In the starting line-up David Silva kept his place, while Mancini also went for the industry of James Milner ahead of Adam Johnson’s directness. Wayne Bridge wasn’t fit once again, so Pablo Zabaleta was given the job of keeping the potentially dangerous N’Zogbia quiet.

Hart – Once again given total protection by those in front of him. With Wigan failing to get a shot on target Joe was forced to make his own entertainment with a slip and an assist for the first goal. 6

Richards – After a couple of early slips on the saturated pitch, Micah once again demonstrated his improved focus on defending. Struggled to make an impact going forward in the first half as it wasn’t clear who should have been playing in front of him. 6

Preview: Wigan Athletic v Manchester City

18th September 2010

City head to Wigan buoyed by Europa League victory after two disappointing Premier League results. Apparently we have won just two of our last nine Premier League matches. Our first league victory away to Wigan is a must if we’re to get back amongst the Champions League places.

Roberto Mancini faces an intriguing selection headache following David Silva’s impressive display in midweek. If he starts on Saturday, who would make way from last weekend’s creative players? Both Adam Johnson (our stand out performer thus far) and James Milner were rested on Thursday.

Europa League verdict: Red Bull Salzburg 0 Manchester City 2

17th September 2010

City put in a thoroughly professional performance to take three points from their opening group fixture. Once David Silva had scored his first goal for the club after 8 minutes, City were in a position of strength and never let it slip. There should have been more before Jo bagged his first for the club in two years.

Roberto Mancini rotated a portion of his squad and played two up front with a midfield diamond. A slightly unusual system but it worked well.

Hart – While not having to make any saves, Joe needed to be on his toes at set pieces. His judgement was good with a couple of punches, then letting his defence take care of the rest. 6

Zabaleta – A welcome run out for the Argentine. Solid defensively and he took up good positions in attack to provide width. As usual Pablo finished the game in a different position to which he started – this time left-back. 7.

Europa League preview: Red Bull Salzburg v Manchester City

16th September 2010

City head to Austria for an early 6pm (BST) kick-off against Salzburg in our opening Europa League fixture. With ourselves and Juventus the favourites to go through, Roberto Mancini could be looking for a victory.

Not that Salzburg should be underestimated, having already come through two Champions League qualifiers before dropping out 3-4 to Hapoel Tel Aviv. Last season they won all six Europa League group games defeating the likes of Lazio and Villarreal along the way.

A fresh start for David Silva could be good news for City

14th September 2010

Possibly the most encouraging aspect of the final few minutes against Blackburn was the influence of David Silva. The Spaniard looked sharper and more dangerous than in any of his games thus far, prompting Roberto Mancini to suggest it’s time to give him more minutes.

There was always the danger that Silva would take time to acclimatise. Having to stay for the full length of the World Cup with Spain resulted in an almost non-existant pre-season with his new club.

City’s gifts not looking so costly

13th September 2010

Following a promising start, the last two fixtures have resulted in a hugely disappointing one point from a hoped for six. The City manager provided the following reflection on how a Tevez miss, a Micah push and a Joe Hart wander have cost us dearly.

Verdict: Manchester City 1 Blackburn Rovers 1

12th September 2010

Another disappointing result saw Joe Hart gift Blackburn the lead before Patrick Vieira rolled back the years to start and finish a move for the equaliser. City nearly won it at the death but one point from six leaves us outside the top four places and playing catch-up already.

There were surprises in the starting eleven as Tevez was passed fit to play. The Argentine didn’t look 100% and paced himself by playing in bursts.

Player ratings: Manchester City v Blackburn Rovers

Hart – After all the plaudits with England it’s hard to recall Joe making a bigger mistake than that for the opening goal. Nor did he fully command his area against the high balls. A vital one-on-one save in the second half was the only redeeming feature. 5

Richards – Won numerous important defensive headers as Rovers launched balls into the area. Not able to add a great deal to the attack but his solidity at the back was welcome. 6
