Europa League preview: Manchester City v Juventus

30th September 2010

Tonight sees Juventus visit Eastlands as the biggest continental club we’ve played, outside of the Thomas Cook Trophy, since the 70′s. Back then Juve were lead from the back by Dino Zoff and managed by Giovanni Trappatoni – a manager who now sees more of Shay Given than we do.

The current Juve side may not be one of their greatest as they undergo a rebuilding process, both on and off the pitch. However the Agnelli family have dug deep once again to allow the signing of Krasic. Like ourselves, they are currently attempting to assimilate a host of new signings, though their start to the season has been less satisfactory than ours.

What does Mancini’s Krasic interest mean for SWP?

29th September 2010

In the build-up to the Juventus game, today sees Roberto Mancini quoted as having looked to sign Milos Krasic when he was in charge of Inter and at City. The Serbian plays on the right wing and there was plenty of speculation linking him to City over the Summer, before he eventually moved to Juve from CSKA Moscow.

There’s no great surprise in Mancini’s interest as Krasic looks a decent winger, scoring a hat-trick at the weekend. It will be interesting to see how he performs on Thursday.

City transfer talk returns already

28th September 2010

It may feel like the transfer window has only just shut but that hasn’t stopped talk of Roberto Mancini making some final additions to his squad in January. Normally this would be unlikely as major deals are considered to difficult and costly during the mid-season window.

However, this January represents the last chance for Sheikh Mansour to splash his cash on new signings. From next summer onwards club finances will come under the scrutiny of Uefa’s Financial Fair Play rules.

Verdict: Manchester City 1 Chelsea 0

27th September 2010

City recorded their most impressive victory of the season so far thanks to a goal from Carlos Tevez and a defensive performance to rank alongside the best in the clubs recent history. With the same defenders as Mark Hughes had available, it doesn’t take a Match of the Day analyst to see where Mancini has had the greatest effect.

With injuries accounting for four players likely to have played full-back, this was a real testament to Italian managerial organisation and motivation. Dedryck Boyata was the young central defender asked to play right-back and did so with great composure and beautifully timed tackling.

Player ratings: Manchester City v Chelsea

25th September 2010

Hart – With brilliant protection in front of him, Joe picked up another clean sheet with a minimum of fuss. A few straightforward saves combined with better judgement in coming off his line than we sas in the Blackburn game. 7

Boyata (Boateng, 88) – Outstanding, bearing in mind he played a full match on Wednesday night, and isn’t a right-back. Mancini showed real faith in the teenager by not giving him obvious cover with a Milner type player in front. Chelsea kept working Dedryck and he kept coming up with the answers. 9

Preview: Manchester City v Chelsea

24th September 2010

And so we move from defeat to West Brom’s second string to the Champions. Carlo Ancelotti’s freescoring side pose our biggest test so far yet it shouldn’t be forgotten we also pose theirs.

Roberto Mancini came through the opening fixtures against Tottenham and Liverpool with four points, and will be looking for a performance at least as good as we provided against Roy Hodgson’s side. One thing’s for sure, after we did the double over them last season, Chelsea won’t be underestimating us.

Carling Cup verdict: West Bromwich Albion 2 Manchester City 1

23rd September 2010

West Brom came from behind with two quick second-half goals to knock City out of the Carling Cup. Roberto Mancini made a full 11 changes from the side that won on Sunday, while Roberto Di Matteo made 10 for West Brom.

Critically, Mancini also had to allow for injured players in Boateng, Richards, Kolarov, Bridge, Lescott, Michael Johnson, Balotelli and Adebayor. As a result he was forced to field several youngsters with half the team in effect a third choice outfit. Shaun Wright-Phillips was also missing which may mean he had a knock as well.

Carling Cup preview: West Bromwich Albion v Manchester City

22nd September 2010

City begin their Carling Cup campaign at the Hawthorns with Roberto Mancini keeping one eye on a Saturday lunchtime date with Chelsea. Rotation enables a manager to keep his squad fresh and tonight should see a host of changes.

The Carling Cup appears to be the least of City’s priorities this season which may be a pity as it requires the fewest number of games to pick up some silverware. Just six fixtures have to be negotiated to end City’s quest for a trophy.

Falcao visits City. Are you watching Micah?

21st September 2010

Falcao, the Brazilian futsal legend, has paid a visit to City this week to demonstrate his skills to City’s under 18 squad. Never mind the under 18′s, there’s plenty in the first team who could learn a thing or two from from Falcao!

For those unfamiliar with futsal, it’s like five a side with a smaller ball and is hugely popular in Brazil. The main reason for this article is an opportunity to show some Falcao on video.

Wayne Bridge set to miss Chelsea game

21st September 2010

Whether Wayne Bridge would have been sufficiently up to speed to play in the Chelsea game is now immaterial as Mark Ogden reports that he’s set to be out for two weeks with a thigh injury.

With Kolarov and Lescott also missing, Roberto Mancini is down to his fourth choice left-back for a match against the free scoring champions. Hardly ideal.
