i sit on level 2 (halfway line)... great view so i do tend to see most on the field; we do have great players on our books and all i witness in every match are loads of headless chickens without a system or formation....but, did you see the way our lads played for england against Brazil, a well organised defence ( apart from red brown from the swamp) surely this goes to show that MH coaching techniques are substandard....

Hi blue tit, I think expectations vary from person to person, and some people's are ludicrous. My own expectation based on the players we have available and the performances of rival teams is that we should be trying to get into fourth place at the moment. I'd love Hughes to succeed and not have to appoint another manager; but playing the way we are, if we fall behind Spurs, Villa and Liverpool, then it's likely questions will be asked.

So what if Mourinho/Hiddink/Benitez/Uncle Tom Cobbleigh turns up and doesn't take City forward? How many of these 'quality potential replacenments' has taken a side at City's stage of development in the EPL and gone on and won things? Get real - expectations are ludicrous just now and the last thing needed is a new manager.

I agree Hughes needs to go, we need a manager who has managed big name players before, a manager who will command the respect of the players and im afraid to say that Hughes isn't that man. The amount of players who have been speaking out in the press is worrying, Robinho is forever saying how he wants to be the worlds best player blah blah blah, Adebayor is obsessed with Aresenal and Tevez is going to retire. We need a manager who will make these players understand that they respect the club or get out. Tactically Hughes is some way off the mark (no pun intended) he seems to have turned Wayne Bridge from steady left back into a man who thinks he a left winger, Barry looks a shadow of his former self, and Lescott also seems to be suffering right now. For me the thing that sums our team up at the moment is the way we give the ball away so cheaply so often, all the top four teams are able to hold the ball when under pressure to take the sting out of the game for five minutes, unfortunately we can't do this, i believe we have the players to, but not the manager who knows how to get them to play that way.

This is exactly the type of article I'm looking for: full of tactical analysis and personal evaluation, done with huge knowledge and intelligence. Damn it, that is the article I've enjoyed the most in years. If you could add the wit of John Burfield or the polish of a Henry Winter, you should consider doing this professionally! Brilliant, and thanks. PS. Self-evidently I agree with every word.

great set of articles there... to be honest better than some of the well known bloggers, he copy and paste articles and sit on the fence with weak opinions.

well thought out and compelling article, even if you dont agree.

I personally do agree, the tactical side of Hughes game is very poor, thats a fundemantal flaw in football management is it not. He is completelty unflexable, unimaginative and limited.

I beleive his reliance on loyal players is a precurser to unrest in the squad. A volatile creature like bellamy is being given licence to be hughes rent-a-gob and that can only go so far. If the manager himself can not criticise or motivate the troops, nor be any good tactically , then why is he there with his massive army of welsh coaches.
